Youth Skating Classes




September-April | Wednesdays | 3:30 or 4:15 p.m. (30 minutes of instruction and 15 minutes of free skate)

This program is intended for any person who is looking to learn to skate or aspiring to be a better skater, figure skater or hockey player.   

Classes are 30 minutes of instruction followed by 15 minutes of free skating.

Jr. Prep / Intro to Freestyle

September-April | Mondays | 4:15-4:45 p.m. | Participants must pass Basic Level 5 to register.

Skills for each class will vary from week to week as will instructors so that skaters are introduced to a variety of coaching techniques and theories. All classes will be on the ice at the same time and divided up based on skaters in attendance each day. This is a great class for skaters wishing to continue from basic skills in a group setting before making a commitment to private lessons or competition. This class is currently offered through the Skating Club of Vail.

Theater on Ice

September-April | Wednesdays | 5-5:30 p.m. 

Theater on Ice is set up for skaters to express their theatrical traits on the ice. This program focuses on the art of performing. Theater on Ice is lead by former Disney on Ice star Charli Kennedy. This class is currently offered through the Skating Club of Vail.

Coaching Staff

The Vail Recreation District has welcomed nationally and internationally-known figure skating coaches to its staff to elevate Dobson Ice Arena's learn to skate programs. Tara lane and Chari Kennedy will bring with them a broad history of coaching, show skating and competitive figure skating to the ice arena.

All ages & levels. Beginning skating, all figure skating levels, power skating for hockey 

Tara Lane started coaching in 1988 and has been coaching figure skating and hockey power skating at Dobson Ice Arena since 2006. Lane's coaching style fosters education for skaters and their parents, progressive techniques for skills development and helping skaters reach their true potential both on and off the ice. Lane says she's excited to work with the new coaches and watch Dobson's skaters foster new skills and techniques, while they have fun in a safe and friendly environment. Lane's competitive history includes competing at the Sectional level for several years in individual figure skating. Additionally, Tara has earned her USFSA Gold Medals (passing through senior level) in figures, freestyle, moves in the field and dance, in addition to two international dances and is a Professional Skaters Association (PSA) Master Rated Coach. Lane is very successful with her figure skating students in basic skills, freestyle, moves in the field, choreography and power skating. In addition, she coaches power skating for hockey players and teams of all ages and abilities. She is the head coach and owner of "Power On Ice" power skating clinics and camps in the Vail Valley, has helped with nationally-recognized power skating programs (Laura Stamm and Robbie Glantz) and was the power skating coach for National Hockey League Hall of Fame inductee Bryan Trottier's summer TNT hockey camps. Tara also enjoys water skiing and snow skiing with her husband Matt, is a Motivational Speaker on a national level for multiple sclerosis patient advocacy and enjoys helping the Multiple Sclerosis Community.

Charli Kennedy

Charli was born and raised in Birmingham, England and started skating at the age of five. Charli's figure skating history includes competing for England in free skate and pairs. She was a gold medalist at the all England championships and placed on the British Team. Charli won gold in the world championships for synchronized skating and ranked 9th in Great Britain when she was 17 years old. 
Charli was accepted into a professional dance school in London, UK although took her first contract as a professional figure skater at age 17. Charli skated for eight years, professionally touring the world with Disney On Ice. She was a part of 'High School Musical the Ice Tour', 'Let's Celebrate' and 'Princess Classics'. 
Charli moved to Vail to pursue a coaching career where she loves to instill her passion for the sport in her students.
