Vail Grail Standings

Need motivation for those new years' resolutions? Get ready to skin, ski and shuffle your way to glory! The Bloch ancd Chapleau Vail Grail is a championship series consisting of three winter events – a new Beaver Creek Uphill and Skimo, a run uphill at Vail Mountain and a snowshoe shuffle - and participants can sign up for one, two or all three races. Racers who complete all races have a shot at winning the coveted Vail Grail, a permanent trophy that will bear the male and female open division winners' names for years to come.

On Sunday, January 19, join us for the new Beaver Creek Uphill and Skimo starting at 7 a.m. The Vail Recreation District brings their winter race series to Beaver Creek for the first time with an uphill and skimo competition. Competitors can choose the uphill or skimo (ascent and descent) option and can use any means to get up the mountain (snowshoes, skis, splitboards or winter running devices). Skis or a snowboard are required to compete in the skimo competition. Participants will ascend approximately 1,700 vertical feet and just under two miles from the base of Arrowhead Village to the top of Arrow Bahn Express Lift. The event will conclude with breakfast and awards at Broken Arrow Restaurant at the base of Arrowhead. Cost for this race is $35 pre/$45 day-of for adults and $25 pre/$35 day-of for students.

On Sunday, February 16, snowshoe, skin, spike, hike or Yaktrax up Vail Mountain during the annual Vail Athletic Club Vail Mountain Winter Uphill Race and Hike. The race starts at 7 a.m. in Lionshead and participants will tackle 2,300 vertical feet and approximately 2.5 miles of groomed trails to reach Eagle's Nest at the top of the Eagle Bahn Gondola on Vail Mountain. Stay after the race for breakfast at Eagle's Nest. As always, this event is ideal for competitors and non-competitors alike and honors the memory of Vail local Lyndon Ellefson, pioneer of the U.S. Mountain Running Team. Portions of the race entry fees go to support the U.S. Mountain Running Team. Adults can register in advance at vailrec.com/register for $35 or for $45 on race day. Student registrations are $25 in advance or $35 on race day.

The Vail Grail champion will be decided on Saturday, March 14 at the ninth annual Krueger Family Shamrock Shuffle. Choose from a 5K or 10K race and bring the kids for the 1K fun run to celebrate all things green in the spirit of St. Patrick’s Day. Taking place on the Vail Nordic Center trails, this event includes race categories for snowshoes and Yaktrax, as well as a non-prize-eligible running shoe category. All races begin at 4 p.m. followed immediately by a lively post-race party inside the beautiful Vail Golf & Nordic Clubhouse. Pre-registration costs for the shuffle are $26 for adults or $36 on race day. Student registrations are $16 in advance or $21 on race day.

Athletes wishing to participate in all three events and compete for the Vail Grail can sign up for the full series for a discount of $85 for adults or $65 for students. Participants that sign up for the full series receive a limited edition VRD Racing Drink Tank mug.

How the scoring works: The Vail Grail will be awarded to the Male and Female with the combined fastest time in the three Vail Grail competitions. The combined time will consist of the Beaver Creek Uphill portion only, the Vail Uphill and the 10K distance in the Shamrock Shuffle. Competitors must compete in the 10K distance at the Shamrock Shuffle to qualify for the Vail Grail but can choose between snowshoe and Yaktrax category. There is no amateur category for the 2020 season.
