The Vail Recreation District’s (VRD) mission is to offer diverse and exceptional recreation opportunities that enhance the physical, social and emotional well-being of all its residents and guests. The VRD aims to help Vail Valley residents and visitors pursue their recreational passions by providing the following:

  • Outlets for competition in summer and winter via a running and a mountain bike race series, and numerous tournaments and/or leagues for hockey, volleyball, lacrosse, softball, golf, tennis, soccer, flag football, broomball, figure skating and rugby.
  • Venues like Dobson Ice Arena, Vail Golf Club, Vail Nordic Center, Vail Gymnastics Center, Vail Nature Center, Vail Skatepark, Vail Tennis Center, Community Programming Room, Vail’s Imagination Station, and use of additional gyms, playing fields and the surrounding White River National Forest via collaboration with local entities.
  • Sports classes and camps for youth, adults and families
  • Opportunities to learn about and appreciate our Rocky Mountain environment through guided activities, classes and camps

The Vail Recreation District Board of Directors, a five-member panel, is responsible for setting policies and guiding staff throughout the year. Each board member is elected to staggered four-year terms. Elections occur every two years in May with the next election scheduled in for May 2014. Board members must be residents or own real property in Vail. The VRD is a special district and is separate from the Town of Vail. The current Board of Directors and the year their terms expire are:

The board meets at 5 p.m. on the second and fourth Thursday of each month at the Vail Town Council Chambers to discuss issues that could impact the VRD and the constituents of the District. Public input is welcome and is always the first item on the agenda. Public Access 5 films and airs Vail Recreation District board meetings. The VRD employs approximately 25 fulltime year-round employees. Employment opportunities increase each summer to maintain services at the Vail Golf Club and with Youth Services.

Part of our mission is to keep recreation affordable. We achieve this with the help of national and local sponsors. We offer grants and scholarships for all our youth programs and free admission for our adult volunteers. We always need and appreciate volunteers and sponsors who help make our programs happen.

The VRD Board and staff closely monitor expenditures and incoming revenue, allowing the organization to meet its mission of providing diverse recreational programs and opportunities for its residents and guests. The VRD’s adopted budget for 2011 allows the organization to continue to provide high quality and cost efficient programs and activities, while remaining financially conservative. All fees listed are in U.S. currency (dollars).

The Vail Recreation District is proud to offer grants or scholarships for most of its youth activities. With the help of various community outreach programs and businesses, the VRD is able to provide need- and merit- based awards to deserving youth throughout the Valley.
